Carnival VIFP Changes 2026: What Changed, the Dates, and What to Do

Carnival retired the VIFP Club on September 1, 2026 and replaced it with Carnival Rewards. If you hold Platinum or Diamond status, or you were working toward it, the ladder you were climbing was swapped for a different one while you were on it. This is the plain version: what changed, the dates that matter, and what I would do about it.

What changed on September 1, 2026

VIFP measured loyalty in days sailed. Carnival Rewards measures it in two currencies. Stars set your status: three stars per dollar spent on fares and onboard purchases, plus stars from casino play and the Carnival World Mastercard. Points are the spendable side: your days sailed convert to points once you opt in (three 7-night cruises are 21 points), and you can redeem points against a cruise deposit, onboard purchases, or a statement credit. There is a 5,000-point bonus at the 50-day milestone.

The change that matters most: stars expire every two years. Under VIFP, status was earned once and kept. Under Rewards, you re-qualify.

The dates

• June 1, 2026 was the original launch date. Carnival pushed it back.
• August 31, 2026 was the opt-in deadline. Members who did not opt in did not carry their VIFP history into Rewards. Anyone who reached Diamond by this date keeps lifetime status.
• September 1, 2026: Carnival Rewards went live.
• December 2028: whatever VIFP status you held on August 31, 2026 is honored through the end of 2028. After that, the two-year star cycle decides your tier.
• End of 2030: unused VIFP benefits that were not transferred expire.

Who keeps what

Diamond members who got there before August 31, 2026 keep lifetime status. That is the one carve-out, and it came after a year of pushback from the people who had sailed the most. Everyone else holds their old tier through December 2028 and then re-qualifies on stars.

The small things tell you where the program puts its priorities. Gold pins are discontinued. Platinum and Diamond pins continue, picked up at the Pixels photo gallery onboard rather than left in your stateroom, and supplies have run short late in the year before. If you want yours, go early in the cruise.

The catch nobody advertised

Four days after launch, Carnival told guests on the September 5, 2026 sailings of Carnival Sunshine from Norfolk and Carnival Vista from Port Canaveral that Platinum perks were cancelled for those voyages: priority boarding and debarkation, early stateroom access for luggage drop-off, priority luggage delivery, and the priority Guest Services line. The reason given was too many Platinum guests on board. Carnival does not publish how many status guests are on a sailing, so you cannot see this coming. With legacy status running through 2028, expect more of these notices on popular itineraries.

I covered this the week it happened. The takeaway has not changed: a perk that can be withdrawn when too many people hold it is a courtesy, not a benefit.

What I would do now

1. Confirm your opt-in went through. Glitches and inconsistent totals appeared right as the window closed, alongside a planned site outage on August 29 and 30. If your stars or points look wrong, raise it with Carnival now, not at the pier.
2. Screenshot your status page. The tier you held on August 31, 2026 is your floor through 2028. Keep proof.
3. Spend points on purpose. Points are the part of this program that is yours to use. A deposit or a statement credit is worth more to most cruisers than a drink coupon.
4. Book early on popular sailings if perks matter to you, and assume priority boarding may not hold on a full ship.
5. If you earned status by sailing often on a budget, know that this program rewards spending, not patience. Decide whether the tier is still worth chasing.
